Health and Safety Policy  

Coventry Sea Cadets consider that the health and safety of its staff, cadets and supporters is of prime importance.  The competent person Coventry Sea Cadets have recognised to assist it in taking Health & Safety measures that comply with legislation in all locations where training takes place is the Commanding Officer.  The success of this policy depends upon the active involvement of everyone undertaking training with Coventry Sea Cadets.  

Implementation

  Coventry Sea Cadets will:

·       Give a positive lead in promoting health and safe training environments and practices.

·       Keep itself informed about changes to health and safety legislation.

·       Follow approved codes of practice in meeting health and safety legislation.

·       Review this policy annually, or more frequently if there are concerns about its effectiveness.

·       Maintain insurance policies to cover its public liability, staff, cadets and supporters in all activities.

Each staff member, cadet and supporter will be given induction about health and safety and the necessary information, instruction and training to ensure the safe performance of training activities.  Induction and Standing Orders will give clear guidance about what staff, cadets and supporters can do meet their responsibilities for their own health and safety.

Staff will be given training (or advice will be sought) from The Sea Cadet Corps on risk assessment.  Risk assessments will be carried out in all locations before staff, cadets and supporters commence their activities.

Staff will check that recommended actions to remove or minimise risks are implemented before training takes place in locations where risks have been identified.

An accident record will be available in the ship’s office.  Staff, cadets and supporters will be reminded that all accidents should be reported.

There will be First Aid provision in all training locations and staff will be encouraged to obtain First Aid qualifications.  Staff, cadets and supporters will be made aware of the names of qualified First Aiders.

Coventry Sea Cadets will ensure that fire exits are clearly marked and that all staff, cadets and supporters are aware of fire procedures in all relevant training areas.

Staff will ensure that suitable protective clothing and equipment is provided and its use supervised on all occasions.

Coventry Sea Cadets will ensure that all training is conducted by suitably qualified instructors in accordance with Sea Cadet Regulations (SCR), Training Instructions (TI) and Training Afloat Regulations for Safety (TARS).
